Nutrigenetics and nontransmissible chronic diseases (NTCDs), such as cardiovascular diseases, cancer, diabetes mellitus type 2 and neurodegenerative diseases, are the main causes of morbidity and mortality worldwide. These pathologies develop as a consequence of a complex correlation between environmental and genetic factors and lifestyle, in which dietary patterns play a key role.
This line of investigation addresses such diseases from a nutrigenetic approach, a discipline that studies how individual genetic variants influence on the response of the organism to different dietary components. Nutrigenetics contributes to the development of the precision nutrition, an approach that allows taking advantage of human individuality to optimize prevention strategies and disease treatments.
The contribution of the interactions between the genetic variability and the diet to the development of NTCD is dependent on each population. This is due to, on the one hand, the fact that the frequency of risk genetic variants depends on the ancestry and, on the other hand, each population has its dominant dietary patterns. In Argentina, the latest data available demonstrate that there is a high prevalence of overweight, obesity, and NTCD linked to an inadequate diet. Also, current dietary patterns are characterized by a high intake of ultra-processed food rich in sugar, saturated fat and sodium and a low consumption of fruits and vegetables, what is translated into a low intake of dietary fiber and other phytonutrients. Therefore, the objective of our line of investigation is to generate knowledge applicable to the design of health policies, programs of prevention and strategies of personalized nutritional intervention.
To address the study of the genetic variability of our population, we participate in the Buenos Aires node of the Argentinean Population's Reference and Genomics Biobank Program (PoblAr).
