Line overview

Nature is a great source of molecules with pharmacological activity. In the search of therapeutic alternatives that allow to replace or complement the current therapies, in the last years it has reemerged with great interest the study of natural compounds as a source of new drugs.
Plant-derived compounds such as flavonoids, polyphenols and terpenes have demonstrated numerous pharmacological properties, among which its among which its chemopreventive and chemotherapeutic activity stands out. Its use as phytodrugs has gained a great interest considering its natural origin, broad availability, low cost, high therapeutic potential and absence of toxic effects with relation to the available conventional drugs. Despite its great potential, its use presents limitations related to its low solubility, stability, volatility and reduced bioavailability which must be solved to improve its effectiveness.
In this context, nanotechnology appears as a powerful tool to overcome limitations related to solubility, stability, metabolism, and unspecificity of action of molecules with pharmacological activity. Nanoparticles are capable of co-encapsulating chemotherapeutic drugs and natural compounds with antitumoral activity and transporting them selectively to tumoral cells. This development arises as an improved therapeutic alternative to the current treatments.
The general objectives of the present project suggest to evaluate the antitumoral activity and the mechanisms of action of phytocompounds in 2D and 3D in-vitro models; to design, characterize and evaluate in-vitro bioactive hybrid nanoparticles containing phytocompounds that serve as low-cost therapeutic systems for the selective transport potentiated activity of antineoplastic drugs.
